What we Mean by No-Compromise® Organic Mattresses

If you’re looking to buy an organic mattress, you may be overwhelmed. Vetting just how organic a mattress is can be confusing. Why? For starters, the very word “organic” is not a regulated term when it comes to home products like mattresses and bedding.

Similar to words like “natural” and “eco-friendly,” the word “organic” can be used by companies that rely on greenwashing tactics to mislead consumers into believing their products are more sustainable than they really are. With ties to both human health and the environment, the quest for organic products can get even murkier.

The good news is that reputable third-party organizations can help. Naturepedic can also help you understand exactly what is in your mattress. We’re passionate about organic fraud prevention – so much so that we were the first non-food brand to complete the Organic Trade Association (OTA)’s fraud prevention program.

Since 2003, Naturepedic has been leading the organic mattress revolution. During that time, our commitment to organic (and to the transparency that comes with it) has only grown. Here’s how we ensure No-Compromise® organic mattresses you can trust.

Certified Organic

When we say organic, we mean certified to a globally recognized standard. All of our mattresses – along with our entire factory – are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

GOTS is the world’s leading organic textile certification. In addition to requiring that a product contains a minimum of 95% organic fibers and only approved accessories, GOTS also requires that certified organic products meet their criteria for:

  • Environmental impact
  • Technical quality
  • Human toxicity
  • Social concerns/International Labour Organization (ILO) compliance

GOTS covers all processing stages, including manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading and distribution. Learn more about GOTS here.

Stringent Organic Material Sourcing

Naturepedic is dedicated to sourcing raw materials that are healthier for humans and the earth. The majority of our GOTS certified cotton is U.S. grown on reputable farms. While we do import some certified organic cotton fabrics internationally, we do not buy from India or China. In fact, our cotton is also certified to the Organic Content Standard (OCS), which ensures proper tracking of organic material from its source to the finished product.

Similarly, our latex is Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified or FSC® certified by Preferred by Nature, a partner of Rainforest Alliance. This helps us protect the earth’s delicate rain forest areas, the people living and working in these regions, and everyone who sleeps on our mattresses.

Certified Non-Toxic

Ditching the harmful chemicals found in conventional mattresses is how we got started, and it remains our core goal. Our MADE SAFE® certification means that our mattresses have been screened against the organization’s list of more than 6,500 banned substances and do not contain any materials known to cause harm to human health. Learn more about MADE SAFE here.

Conventional mattresses are made with quite a few questionable substances, including polyurethane (memory) foam, PFAS, phthalates, formaldehyde and known carcinogens. Considering that we spend as much as a third of our lives asleep on our mattresses, it’s especially important not to compromise on toxic chemicals.

Certified for Low Chemical Emissions.

Speaking of harmful chemicals, Naturepedic mattresses also come with the peace of mind of these additional assurances from Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL):

  • UL Formaldehyde Free verified
  • GREENGUARD® Gold certified

This means that our products have been vetted for formaldehyde, as well as tested in a sealed chamber for off-gassing harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Learn more about mattresses and indoor air quality here.

No Flame Retardants, Glues or Adhesives

Naturepedic No-Compromise mattresses are designed to pass all government flammability standards without using any chemical flame retardants. We do this by making our mattresses with fire-resistant materials, including organic cotton and wool, and by avoiding mattress fillers like memory foam, which is highly flammable. When we avoid harmful chemicals from the start, we avoid the need to add extra chemicals.

We also cut out nonessential chemicals by using a heat-sealing technique in our manufacturing process instead of glues and adhesives, which typically contain – you guessed it – more chemicals.

Extra Precautions for Crib Mattresses

Though it may not feel like it to sleep-deprived parents, newborns spend as much as 16 hours a day sleeping. When it comes to certified organic crib mattresses, we add a few key items to our No-Compromise terms, such as:

In fact, Naturepedic offers the only crib mattress on the market that is breathable, waterproof and certified organic. This is in part because we are the only crib mattress manufacturer to provide a food-grade polyethylene waterproofing made from non-GMO sugarcane.

Custom Comfort for Adults

Let’s face it, no matter how much healthier an organic mattress is, if it’s not comfortable, you’re not going to want to sleep on it. That’s why we don’t compromise on comfort either. Some customers tell us our mattresses “sleep cool.” The reality is simply that we avoid polyurethane foam, which tends to make you feel hot and sweaty.

We also provide options like our customizable EOS collection, which enables you to unzip the cover and design your desired firmness with:

  • Any combination of soft latex, medium latex, or firm latex, and plush or firm coils
  • The ability to tailor firmness to each side of the bed
  • Interchangeable layers you can swap out over time as your preferences change

At Naturepedic, we’re on a mission to transform people’s lives with the Safe Healthy Sleep™ we all need, and we believe that starts with a certified organic sleep surface.
