How can down trap air and still be breathable? It’s all in the feathers. Down consists of fine, fluffy fibers that form a cluster-like shape with small air pockets between their fibers – it’s what keeps down pillows so lofty. Yet, down’s overall structure isn’t dense and allows air to move through the spaces between the clusters. This helps to dissipate excess heat and moisture, so you don’t sleep hot and sweaty – promoting breathability without sacrificing support.

What is a down pillow?
A down pillow is filled with the soft, fluffy clusters found beneath the outer feathers of ducks or geese. These clusters create a light, airy fill that compresses easily and offers a plush, cloud-like feel with minimal resistance.
Do down pillows poke you?
Not typically. Down pillows are filled with soft clusters that don’t have quills, so they offer a smoother, softer feel than feather pillows. However, some down pillows may contain small amounts of feathers for added structure, and in those cases, occasional poking is possible – though far less common than with traditional feather pillows. A down-proof pillow encasement (like Naturepedic’s) helps to prevent poking.
Are down pillows best for side sleepers?
