MADE SAFE® Certified
Screened against 15,000+ harmful substances for human and ecosystem health.
MADE SAFE is an independent certification program focused on ingredient safety and ecosystem health.
Products that earn the MADE SAFE seal are screened using the Ecosystem Approach, which ensures that what a product is made of won’t harm humans, animals, or the planet.
For mattresses and bedding, what something is made from matters more than most people realize. Conventional products can legally contain carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, PFAS ("forever chemicals"), flame retardants, and other substances that MADE SAFE prohibits.
Why Does MADE SAFE Certified Matter?
“Shoppers trust the MADE SAFE seal when purchasing, knowing that MADE SAFE certified products are truly safer choices for use on their bodies, with their families, and in their homes.”
-Amy Ziff, Founder, MADE SAFE
What Is MADE SAFE?
MADE SAFE is the only human health and ecosystem-focused product certification program. Unlike certifications that focus strictly on emissions, organic content, or a limited group of chemicals, MADE SAFE takes a broader approach. They do not compromise on ingredient safety for only humans, but also consider impacts on air, water, soil, animals, and the planet. The seal is used on a wide range of everyday products, including cosmetics, apparel, household cleaners, baby products, and home furnishings like mattresses and bedding.
How Does MADE SAFE Evaluate Products?
MADE SAFE requires complete transparency of what something is made up of. It applies their proprietary “Ecosystem Approach” to product screenings. First, products are evaluated against the MADE Banned List of more than 15,000 substances including plastics, PFAS, and high-risk pesticides.
From there, MADE SAFE further screens substances for potential bioaccumulation in people and animals, as well as human, terrestrial, and aquatic toxicity, environmental persistence, and supply chain contamination.
MADE SAFE Founder Amy Ziff explains, “We are grounded in science and require proof rather than taking a label as the whole story. Most products are more complicated than the materials listed on their label.”
MADE SAFE At-A-Glance
- Requires complete ingredient disclosure and manufacturing transparency
- Screens against 15,000+ banned or restricted substances
- Evaluates impacts on human health and ecosystem safety
- Screens for probable carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, toxins (behavioral, developmental, neurological, reproductive, or teratogenic), hazardous flame retardants, high-risk pesticides, toxic solvents, and harmful VOCs
- Reviews substances in the context of how products are actually used
- Goes beyond legal minimums and marketing claims

Why MADE SAFE Matters for Mattresses & BeddingMADE-SAFE-certified mattresses and bedding have been made without thousands of harmful substances that may commonly be found in the sleep space, including flame retardants, PFAS, vinyl/PVC, formaldehyde-based adhesives, and the chemical treatments behind "stain-resistant" and "wrinkle-resistant" claims. The certification exists because legally, U.S. regulations permit the use of many of these harmful substances — even for the products you sleep on every night. Few products spend more time against your body than your mattress, which is why many health-conscious shoppers look beyond what's merely legal and seek products that have been independently screened to a higher standard.

We’re Proud to Offer MADE SAFE Certified Products
Naturepedic became the first-ever mattress brand to earn MADE SAFE certification in 2016, reinforcing our long-standing commitment to healthier materials and greater transparency. Today, the certification extends across our full sleep collection, including our crib and kids' mattresses, where chemical safety concerns are especially important given children's developing bodies and the many hours they spend sleeping.
MADE SAFE Founder Amy Ziff has even chosen Naturepedic for her own home, saying, "I sleep on a Naturepedic mattress. It's what I use, and it's what I use for my family. We sleep better knowing we don’t breathe in pollutants such as fire retardants, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals that can be in a traditional mattress. Besides all of that, they’re the most comfortable beds!”

MADE SAFE FAQs
What types of products can be MADE SAFE certified?
The MADE SAFE certification applies to a wide range of consumer products, including: apparel, baby and child (personal care, bedding, apparel, bottles, etc.), personal care, perfume, cosmetics, skin care, period care, sexual health personal care, oral care, sunscreen, cleaning and household products, bedding (mattresses, pillows, toppers, bedding, etc.), as well as furniture.
Does MADE SAFE mean a product is “nontoxic”?
There is no universal legal definition of "nontoxic" for products. Therefore, no certification can guarantee zero risk in every circumstance. Instead, MADE SAFE screens products against more than 15,000 harmful substances using rigorous, science-based criteria to help consumers choose products with safer ingredients. The goal is to make sure that the products we use daily do not lead to harm for human health or the environment.
What chemicals does MADE SAFE restrict?
The MADE Banned List includes more than 15,000 of the most harmful pollutants and substances associated with concerns like carcinogenicity, endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and genotoxins. This includes categories such as:
- PFAS and fluorinated compounds
- Toxic flame retardants
- Phthalates
- Harmful VOCs
- Heavy metals
- Formaldehyde releasers
- High-risk pesticides
- Toxic solvents
- Harmful antimicrobials
- Synthetic musks
How is MADE SAFE different from GREENGUARD Gold?
GREENGUARD Gold primarily focuses on testing products for low chemical emissions and VOCs. MADE SAFE takes a broader approach, screening for thousands of harmful substances while also considering ecosystem impacts, manufacturing transparency, and material safety.
How is MADE SAFE different from EWG Verified?
Both certifications focus on safer products and ingredient transparency, but each evaluates products differently. EWG Verified includes ingredient disclosure, emissions criteria, and restrictions on chemicals linked to human health concerns, while MADE SAFE uses a human health and ecosystem-focused screening process considering potential sources of pollution as well as harmful impacts on soil, sediment, air, water, and human aquatic and/or terrestrial life. In the sleep environment specifically, EWG Verified certifies mattresses only, while MADE SAFE covers mattresses, pillows, bedding, and bedroom furniture.
Are all Naturepedic products MADE SAFE certified?
Yes, all Naturepedic products meet the MADE SAFE standard. Please note that some newer products may still be pending review since the rigorous evaluation process takes time. You can check each product page to see what certifications apply.
