Developed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the organization behind the Skin Deep® cosmetics database and other health-related consumer guides, EWG Verified helps people identify products that meet strict standards for material transparency and chemical screening. For mattresses, this includes screening for chemicals linked to asthma, endocrine disruption, fertility issues, cancer, and other concerns.
What Does EWG Verified Mean?

EWG Verified is a third-party certification developed by the Environmental Working Group to help consumers identify products that meet strict standards for ingredient safety, transparency, and health impact. From household cleaning products to pet shampoo, EWG Verified applies to a range of common products we bring into our homes and use every day. In 2023, EWG Verified extended this certification to include mattresses.
EWG Verified: Mattresses was developed by a team of scientists, toxicologists, and product safety experts. It evaluates both the materials used in mattresses and the potential toxin exposures those materials may bring into your bedroom.
Earning the EWG Verified mark involves multiple testing and evaluation measures designed to help ensure companies are using the safest available ingredients. Brands are also required to substantiate the safety of their materials through supporting documentation, including material safety data sheets (MSDS), which provide information about a material’s chemical composition, safe handling and use, and potential risks.
EWG Verified At-a-Glance
According to Jocelyn Lyle, EVP of Mission and Partnerships at EWG, “This is false, as a brand is only able to carry the EWG Verified certification if they have met EWG's criteria and we have verified its ingredient safety.”
It’s true there is a licensing fee for brands to use the mark. However, EWG Verified is not an advertising partnership or paid endorsement, and products are only eligible if they meet EWG’s established standards.
The reality is that you spend roughly a third of your life on your mattress. For infants and young children, it's even more. Yet mattresses can still legally contain materials associated with a wide range of risks to your health and your home’s indoor air quality. And, manufacturers do not have to disclose all of this.
EWG's standards go significantly further than what government regulations currently require, screening for a broader range of substances and requiring clear disclosure of all materials.
In 2024, Naturepedic became the first mattress brand to earn the EWG Verified certification. Shortly after, our founder sat down with EWG’s president and co-founder Ken Cook to discuss this industry milestone. The certification applies to a variety of consumer products that people use every day, including personal care products, household cleaners, pet grooming items, baby essentials, and mattresses. There is no legal definition of “nontoxic” for a mattress, and nearly everything in our environment involves some level of chemical exposure. That being said, EWG Verified provides rigorous standards for ingredient transparency, material safety, and low chemical emissions. The certification was developed by a team of scientists and toxicologists, and it restricts chemicals linked to human and environmental health concerns.
EWG Verified restricts or prohibits a wide range of chemicals and materials that pose risks to people and our planet. For mattresses, this includes flame retardants, fiberglass, PFAS chemicals, certain VOCs, PVC/vinyl, and other substances linked to issues like cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive harm, allergies, or indoor air pollution.
Both certifications address indoor air quality and chemical exposure, but they evaluate different things. GREENGUARD Gold focuses primarily on VOC emissions, testing products for chemical emissions through Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL). EWG Verified includes criteria on chemical emissions but also reviews ingredient disclosure, restricted substances, material safety, and manufacturing practices.
All Naturepedic mattresses are EWG Verified. However, this certification only applies to mattresses, so our bedding, accessory, and furniture products are not eligible. Rest assured that we do take care to have our non-mattress products certified to relevant nontoxic standards like MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold, as well as organic standards when applicable.
