Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification helps verify these materials come from responsibly managed sources and can be traced through certified supply chains. Developed by FSC, an international nonprofit organization that certifies more than 400 million acres of forests worldwide, FSC certification helps combat deforestation, safeguard wildlife habitats, maintain clean water, and uphold the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities.
FSC Certification At-a-Glance
FSC is the world’s leading certification system for responsible forestry. It looks at the entire forest ecosystem and sets standards that help protect forests while supporting wildlife, workers, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and future generations.
Founded in 1994 in response to growing concerns about deforestation and illegal logging, FSC has become the gold standard for responsible forest management. It’s also the only forest certification system that is ISEAL Code Compliant, which means the certification itself is independently vetted against a globally recognized framework for credible sustainability standards.
FSC certification establishes standards for both how forests are managed and how forest-based materials move through the supply chain. These standards help promote responsible forest management while ensuring eligible materials remain traceable from their source to the finished product. To maintain certification, organizations must complete independent third-party audits and demonstrate that eligible forest-based materials remain traceable through FSC Chain of Custody certification.

In 2019 Naturepedic became the first mattress brand to earn FSC certification. We maintain FSC Chain of Custody certification through Preferred by Nature for all natural latex, real wood, and paper and cardboard packaging materials we source from FSC-certified suppliers. In 2024, we upgraded to a Kraft paper roll-packing system that uses FSC-certified paper instead of plastic for mattresses and comfort layers, significantly cutting back on plastic packaging while supporting our forests.

No. While FSC is best known for certifying wood, it can also apply to other forest-based materials, including natural latex harvested from rubber trees, paper, and certain packaging materials. In general, if it comes from a forest, FSC may be able to certify it.
