Why Naturepedic for You

Discover Better Sleep and the Benefits of an Organic Mattress

Sleep is central to a healthy and happy life. Research consistently shows that a good night’s sleep helps the body fight disease and maintain balance with its surroundings, making it one of the most important factors in overall health. A good nights sleep also affects your relationships and productivity, helping you live life to its fullest.

So how does one achieve this sleep nirvana? Well, obviously comfort is important. So is back support and proper spinal alignment. But there's another issue that's often overlooked - the materials you surround yourself with while you sleep. These materials truly make a difference.

Sleep is a time for our bodies to rejuvenate and heal themselves. Many mattress materials used today contain chemicals that are foreign to our bodies and are quite "unnatural." The mainstream approach has been to leverage technology to construct foams and other materials with "improved" comfort characteristics. These new technologies are indeed comfortable, but they come with a price - the introduction of new chemicals into our sleep environment.

We believe that natural materials are at the core of superior comfort and support. Mother Nature provides us with the best unrivaled materials that are actually in harmony with our bodies. Would you rather sleep on a pile of chemicals (literally) or be surrounded by the finest organic materials Mother Nature has to offer? Would your immune system rather be fighting foreign chemicals while you sleep or healing itself instead?

Every night on your Naturepedic mattress is like a holiday from a hectic and stressful day. Your sleep environment should also be a safe haven from all the chemicals you're bombarded with on a daily basis. This is our mission and goal. We trust you will receive unconditional love from your Naturepedic mattress night after night for many years. Your best night awaits you!

What’s In a Naturepedic Organic Mattress?

Certified Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is the purest form of cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). In mattresses, organic cotton is a healthier alternative to foams (which are chemically treated). Naturepedic uses only U.S. grown and certified organic cotton filling in its mattresses.

Certified Organic Wool
Wool wicks away moisture, provides natural fire protection, and offers temperature regulation, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. GOTS certified organic wool facilitates healthy, well treated sheep and the elimination of harmful chemicals in the processing of the wool.

Organic Latex
After harvesting from the rubber tree, the latex sap is cured into a comfortable luxurious foam. Unlike synthetic and even all-natural blends, we only source our latex from reputable certified organic suppliers, ensuring purity, fair labor practices and support for healthy farming to protect our planet's latex forests. The finished latex is certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS).

Steel Innerspring
Naturepedic uses only the highest quality innersprings available. Steel springs provide heavy duty support without any health or allergy concerns. In particular, our continuous coil innerspring provides stable, motion-transfer reducing support that is both comfortable and supportive. 6 gauge border wire adds heavy duty edge support for long lasting durability.

Organic Cotton Encased Coils - Support
The coils in our luxury models are individually wrapped in certified organic cotton fabric and hand assembled for unmatched quality. This method ensures isolation of movement and pressure point relieving comfort that contours to your body. Designed to provide a strong and supportive base. Made in our GOTS certified organic facility. Produced on our own equipment in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Organic Cotton Encased Coils - Comfort
Also individually wrapped and hand assembled in certified organic cotton fabric, this 2" layer adds body contouring comfort for a softer, pressure point relieving feel in our luxury models. Produced on our own equipment in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Fire Protection - Done The Right Way
The primary filling material used in most mattresses is polyurethane foam - a highly flammable petroleum-based material. In fact, the National Association of State Fire Marshals refers to it as “solid gasoline.” Due to its high flammability, polyurethane foam is typically treated or wrapped with fire retardant chemicals. Some of these chemicals introduce health and toxicity concerns. In fact, most manufacturers don't even disclose their fire retardant ingredients.

At Naturepedic, we don't like questionable chemicals, and we certainly don't like fire retardant chemicals! We consider the best form of fire protection to be superior product design that avoids the need for these chemicals in the first place. Organic cotton, for example, is a far superior filling material and is significantly less flammable. Through extensive research and creative product design, we've eliminated the need for fire retardant chemicals and flame retardant barriers in our products. This unique and innovative approach provides a simple and elegant solution that meets all Federal and State flammability standards. After all, the safest chemicals are none at all!

What’s NOT In a Naturepedic Mattress?

Questionable Chemicals
Naturepedic follows the precautionary principle and eliminates questionable chemicals in the first place. Naturepedic also avoids the use of certain conventional mattress materials such as vinyl/PVC and polyurethane foam in favor of materials such as organic cotton, organic latex rubber and organic wool. In addition, Naturepedic eliminates perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), questionable fire retardant chemicals, and antibacterial biocides.

Why Should You Sleep on an Organic Mattress?

Though you may not notice the hours passing by, you will spend more time on your mattress than almost any other object in your daily life. The average person spends one third of their life on a mattress. It might shock you to know what that mattress is actually made of. That new mattress smell is not a good thing. It's chemical offgassing.

Since the 70’s, almost all mattresses have been made from polyurethane foam. Why? Because it’s cheap and easy to mass produce. It is also highly flammable because it is made from petroleum. In order to combat the flammability, copious amounts of flame-retardant chemicals are added. Manufacturers also use industrial adhesives to hold the internal layers together. The average mattress today contains 5 to 10 pounds of adhesive!

All of these materials can release chemicals that get into the air above your mattress. We at Naturepedic designed our organic mattresses to be free of all these materials and chemicals in the first place. Instead, we use organic cotton, organic wool, and organic latex to make the most chemical-free and comfortable mattresses in the world.

Are Organic Mattresses as Comfortable as Regular Mattresses?

They are actually MORE comfortable. That's because natural materials are able to breathe which means you will sleep cooler and less sweaty. The wool that is directly beneath the surface is excellent at wicking away moisture and humidity. The opposite is true for mattresses made from polyurethane foam. Do you know what polyurethane foam is also used for? Wall insulation! That is because it is efficient at keeping heat in. If you sleep hot, it’s probably not a great idea to sleep on insulation. Non-organic mattress manufacturers try to combat this by adding a variety of chemicals into the foam to make it feel cooler (great… more chemicals). Organic materials do not need additives! Mother nature made them just right.

Is “Organic” the same thing as “Green”, “Eco-Friendly”, or “Natural”?

Not at all. Companies love to use these words. But beware, most of these words do not mean anything. “Green” is a color that makes you think of nature. That’s about as far as it goes. But if a company says they sell “Green Mattresses” what exactly does that mean? Well, not a whole lot. The same is true for “Natural Mattresses”. What if a mattress is 95% natural, but contains 5% toxic chemicals? Kinda defeats the purpose. These labels are not helpful.

Organic on the other hand is a regulated term. It is illegal to sell food labelled as “organic” if it is not certified by the USDA. For mattresses, there is a standard called GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) which certifies that the mattress is truly organic. The standard makes sure that the ingredients used in the mattress do not contain toxic chemicals, pesticides, GMOs, heavy metals and a host of other things. They also check to make sure the company making the mattress is using fair labor policies and is socially responsible.

There is a lot of snake oil in the mattress industry. GOTS organic certification is one way to help cut through the noise.

Can you Trust GOTS Certification?

The short answer is yes, but we must make an important note here. Some unscrupulous companies have found a way to make it look like the product they are selling you is certified when it is not. You might see the GOTS logo or words like “GOTS Certified” on their website, but perhaps only 5% of their products are certified, and the product you want is not part of that 5%. Another trick is to use one GOTS certified ingredient, such as a fabric layer, but the rest of the mattress has never been checked by GOTS. One company actually has a GOTS certified factory, displays the logo and talks GOTS, but the product they ship is not actually certified!!! Unless it says clearly that the mattress you are looking at is GOTS certified, you should be suspicious. Let us take this opportunity to say clearly that all Naturepedic mattresses are fully certified by GOTS.

Who is Naturepedic and What Makes Their Organic Mattresses Unique?

We have been making organic mattresses for 15 years. Our GOTS Certified Eco Factory is in Chagrin Falls, OH where our majority Amish workforce hand assembles each mattress to perfection. The founders, Barry Cik and his two sons Jason and Jeffrey made it their mission to bring chemical-free sleep to anybody who wants it.

There's an inherent cost to doing it right

There are plenty of cheap “Organic” or “Natural” mattresses out there. If there is one thing we’ve learned, it’s that there truly is an inherent cost to doing it right. In order to keep the cost down, some of our competitors cut corners. For example, one competitor says, “no adhesives between the comfort layers”. But they have several pounds of adhesives in their coil system! At Naturepedic, we had to reinvent our coil equipment so that we can produce coils without any adhesives whatsoever. This is a cost that no other manufacturer would take the time or expense to do.

Our competitors almost all use some form of flame retardants. They try to justify why their flame retardants are actually safe. But we have been doing this for a long time, and every few years, the government bans another group of chemicals that was previously considered “safe”. At Naturepedic, we just do not use flame retardants. Period. We are able to pass the tests for flame retardancy due to our design alone.

The whole point of buying an organic mattress is to reduce chemicals and get something that is actually made with healthier materials. You only buy a mattress once every 10 years. Don’t be fooled by marketing glitz and flashy sales. Get a product from a company that is transparent and does it the right way.
