Winter is also better known as cold and flu season. Sniffling, sneezing and coughing can seriously put a damper on your winter activities. So while you can’t control what your coworkers or people in public are doing to put health first, you can control what happens in your home.

1.) Don’t Skip Your Cleaning Ritual

The days are getting darker earlier, and the temperature is dropping. When you get home from work or simply have a lazy Saturday, it’s easy to let household cleaning fall out of pattern. In the winter, however, you are bringing home all kinds of germs, so make sure you clean surfaces regularly. You don’t want to be surrounded by germs.

2.) Stay On Top Of Clutter

The dim lights of winter have proven to have a negative effect on many people’s mental health. Studies also show that surrounding yourself with clutter can be detrimental to your emotional health. During winter, set aside time each week to organize your home. Coming home to a tidy house will make you want to sit down and relax versus stressing.

3.) Keep Your Fridge Stocked With Healthy Foods

Do you notice your refrigerator looks a little empty during the winter? Is it easier to order in than leave the house for trips to the grocery store? This time of year, more than ever, it’s important to keep healthy, nutritious foods in your home. The best defense against illness is putting good things in your body. Plus, it’s good practice to get out of the house and do something productive this time of year, like grocery shopping.

Specifically, keep foods high in Vitamin C on hand to fight off colds. Tea and organic honey are also good things to keep in the cupboards this time of year.

4.) Don’t Be Heavy-Handed With The Heat

This is one habit to avoid! Ever wonder why when you wake up your throat is scratchy and your skin is dry? It’s because you are cranking up the heat! Yes, it’s cold, and you want your home to be nice and toasty, but that warmth can actually have adverse effects. That’s not to say you can’t turn on some heat, just try not to overdo it. If you need it to be very warm, try using a humidifier to counteract the drying effects of heat. 5.) Open The Windows Once a Week

During the summer you probably make an effort to open your windows and let the sun shine through. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean there’s no sun, in fact, you still need the benefits of that natural sunlight! Have that same sunny mentality as you do in the summer, and you will immediately feel your mood lift.
